Easy Cold Brew Coffee
Cold brew coffee is unbelievable easy to make, and for anyone that enjoys coffee, this recipe is a must.
Although often purchased, it wasn’t till recently that we started experimenting with cold brew coffee at home. Perhaps many of us assume it would be hard or burdensome to make.
Making cold brew is a relatively simple process and not much different to making regular coffee. The difference is that the coffee mixture has to steep or soak in the fridge for an extended period of time – this can be anywhere from 12-24 hours.
How To Make Cold Brew Coffee at Home
For this recipe, you will need coarsely ground coffee, filtered water and milk. Additionally, you will need a mason jar or a similar container to steep the coffee mixture and two paper filters.
For the coarsely ground coffee, you can use pre-ground coffee beans, but for the ultimate cup of cold brew coffee, grind fresh coffee beans or if you don’t have a coffee grinder, grind the beans at the store. Be sure to choose a coarse grind size.
Place the coffee grounds in a large Mason jar and pour filtered water on top. Stir to combine the coffee grounds and water. Cover the jar and sit at room temperature for 12-24 hours—longer brew results in more robust coffee.
Once ready, strain the coffee. We recommend doing this twice with a home DIY method. Place a fine-mesh strainer over a bowl and line it with paper filters. Pour the coffee through the paper filter, repeating the process twice. This will ensure no gritty grounds are left behind.
Typically, cold brew coffee is served over ice and, depending on your personal preference, milk. We love using oat milk, but any good quality plant-based milk will work.
Consider Different Ratios
To achieve different outcomes, you can modify brew times, grind size, and brew ratios. Thankfully, cold brew can be forgiving, and you can easily test different brew ratios. Overall, the suggestion is to start with a 1:4 or 1:5 ratio of ground coffee to water in cold water for 12 to 24 hours. After that, the cold brew concentrate is diluted with ice, water and/or milk.
This recipe calls for ~50g of ground coffee to 500ml of cold water. This will result in a decent coffee concentrate that you can keep on hand in the fridge before diluting with more water or milk.
